Throughout September, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD is joining the National Attendance Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of regular school attendance and its direct connection to student success.
School attendance is essential to academic performance and overall student development. The goal of the district's initiative is to educate students, families and community members about absenteeism and the long-term impact missing school has on academic progress.
This year’s campaign features the theme "I Show Up Because...", encouraging students across the district to reflect on and share why they love coming to school every day and why being present matters for their future.
Oftentimes, families do not realize how quickly absences add up. Missing just two days of school per month causes a student to miss 10% of the school year. Nationwide, chronic absence—defined as missing 18 days per school year—doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic from 8 million to 14.7 million students. By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes the primary indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
Consistent attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of student success," said Superintendent Dr. Wendy Eldredge. "When our students are present, they thrive. We are asking our entire CFBISD family to join us in prioritizing daily attendance and celebrating the power of showing up.”
To encourage participation, CFBISD invites students and staff to celebrate Attendance Awareness with spirit days held on Tuesdays throughout the month:
- Sept. 8 (Attendance Kick-off): Wear a favorite sports team shirt or jersey.
- Sept. 15 (Hats Off to Good Attendance): Wear a favorite school-appropriate hat.
- Sept. 22 (Shining Star Attendance): Wear neon colors.
- Sept. 29 (A-Twin-Dance): Pair up with a classmate or colleague and dress alike.
